چکیده

Carrier sensing is a key mechanism that enables decentralized sharing of unlicensed spectrum. However, carrier sensing in its current form is fundamentally unsuitable when devices transmit at different power levels, a scenario increasingly common given the diversity of Wi-Fi APs in the market and the need for WiFi’s co-existence with new upcoming standards such as LAA/LWA. The primary contribution of this paper is a novel carrier sensing mechanism – skip correlation – that extends carrier sensing to accommodate multiple transmit power levels. Through an FPGA based implementation on the WARP platform, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique in a variety of scenarios including support for backward compatibility.

Asymptotic Close to Optimal Resource Allocation in Centralized Multi-band Wireless Networks

This paper concerns sub-channel allocation in multi-user wireless networks with a view to increasing the network throughput. It is assumed there are some sub-channels to be equally divided among active links, such that the total sum rate increases, where it is assumed each link is subject to a maximum transmit power constraint. This problem is found to be a non-convex optimization problem and i...

Energy-optimum Throughput and Carrier Sensing Rate in Csma Based Multi-hop Network

The application model for the energy consumption of a node as a function of its throughput in a wireless CSMA network. We first model a single-hop network, and then a multi-hop network. We show that operating the CSMA network at a high throughput is energy inefficient since unsuccessful carrier sensing attempts increase the energy consumption per transmitted bit. Operating the network at a low ...

Enhancing Efficiency and Effectiveness of 802.11 MAC in Wireless Mesh Networks

The 802.11 MAC protocol is widely used in wireless mesh networks. However, with multi-hop transmissions prevalent in such networks, neither the current 802.11 DCF basic scheme nor the RTS/CTS scheme can achieve full utilization of network capacity for various reasons. First, the 802.11 MAC provides low spatial reuse (low parallelism of transmissions). Second, the collision avoidance mechanism i...

A 433-MHz Rail-to-Rail Voltage Amplifier with Carrier Sensing Function for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper we propose a novel functional amplifier suitable for low-power wireless receivers in a wireless sensor network. This amplifier can change input threshold level as carrier sensing level, since it has a minimum input amplitude to be amplified. A simple rail-to-rail output is suitable for a subsequent digital interface. The target frequency is 433 MHz, and the maximum voltage gain is...

Coordinating transmit power and carrier phase for wireless networks with multi-packet reception capability

Driven by advances in signal processing and multiuser detection (MUD) technologies, it has become possible for a wireless node to simultaneously receive multiple signals from other transmitters. In order to take full advantage of MUD in multi-packet reception (MPR) capable wireless networks, it is highly desirable to make the compound signals frommultiple transmitters more separable on its cons...
